Sole & Noey get the world champions out of jail

BERLIN FOUR NATIONS DAY ONE (hosted by  Berlin Hockey Club at the Zehlenndorfer Stadium)
In the first two games  of the Berlin Four Nations (Training) friendlies in Berlin at the Zehlendorfer Stadium which sees  round robins between Germany (WR 3) , Argentina, (WR1st) Australia (WR 6th )and Korea (WR 8th) , both  ended in identical scores with Carlos Retegui’s world champions Argentina’s “Las Leonas” drawing 3-3 with Alan Commens Australian “Hockeyroos” whom he has been in charge of  for a little over six months.  In the later game the hosts Germany could only draw with the Korean 3-3 but spookily also came from behind in the second half to grab the draw.
It was Australia who took the lead with a goal from Renee Trost  on 21 minutes with Georgina Parker adding a second just before half time and the world champions going in at the break  2-0 down.  The second half was end to end stuff with missed opportunities on both sides until Sole Garcia found the net to make it 2-1. After a series of missed shorts Ashleigh Nelson finally scored  again for the Australians on 64 minutes but Las Leonas began the comeback Rocío Sánchez Moccia making it 3-2 and Noey Barrionuevo  rescuing pride with four minutes to go with a short  goal leveling the score. Afterwards Luciana Aymar described it as a “dificult” game with room for improvements since she felt they didn’t play that well today.  Tomorrow they  take on Korea .
Whilst the hockeyroos will have been more  encouraged by this result I am sure they will not get over excited about it as this and the Trophy represents a long haul and in the end this torunament is about national pride. Neither the current world rankings which date back to last autumn (and thus not a reliable indicator of genuine form)  but also such competitions in the run up to the World Champions Trophy starting June 25th will of course be highly competitive and a matter of pride but they are also, in the main  an opportunity for the coaches to see how revised teams cope under close to authentic big occasion conditions.  All coaches swill be watching closely and looking for ways to improve and what really counts is what happens when the teams meet in Amsterdam.
