Forget the sprawling  and overcrowded London as your weekend break or familoy holiday destination. Come to the North West England  have it all , giving you two, not one, exceptional, next-door-neighbour, must-visit international cities  and relish Manchester and Salford , the latter with its multi- international award winning  waterside heaven , the internationally acclaimed ,outstanding Salford Quays and Media City. Both cities are within the boundaries of the county of Greater Manchester which itself has some 60% of green space and rich industrial heritage in buildings, historic inland waterways and many first class museums and a long list of great , unique tourist attractions , parks and country parks and with easy reach of national parks and rural Northern England either by its  motorway network( the most comprehensive in Western Europe) of by trains from the city centre.

The central focus of Manchester City centre, which unlike overhwhelming and frantic London, I strongly believe, has a welcoming town-like atmosphere, is the completely revamped and refurbished Piccadilly Gardens an award-winning dynamic public open space surrounded by big names stores, hotels as well as lovely bars and restaurants immediately facing it. It had become very run down as a former Victorian sunken public garden whose trees and layout made it difficult to navigate and indeed had a reputation for anti-social behaviour. that’s all changed and it’s the place to be or visit  as you take in this mazingly diverse and vibrant area of Bitain. The new gardens are beautifully designed and eco friendly ; also flat at street level and its walkways reflect the natural routes people took across the space so it is easy to get around. You will hear live music any day with buskers from a variety of cultures there to entertain and organised concerts in the summer as well as a thriving market with stalls offering high quality local produce and products.

Range of high quality bars and restaurants with outside terrace seating open direclty onto the gardens- sit , eat , drink and enjoy the atmosphere and watch the world amble by. No hassle.

Two large grassed areas are a great place to meet friends and picnic amongst the hustle and bustle of passing City life. The gardens are so easy to find close to Picadilly mainline railway station and an interchange for local buses and the magnificent and efficient, ever extending Metro tram. (The tram network is a great way to get around whether you want to get to Salford Quays & Media City, East Manchester with its National Cycling Centre & Velodrome, Manchester City Etiad Football Stadium , go North to explore Bury and beyond or get to rural Cheshire passing Manchester United football ground and Old Trafford Cricket Ground.) The public open space’s design was the outcome of an international competition following the IRA bombing in the nineties which was seen by our forward thinking city Council as an opportunity for growth and positive change in the city.

The result was this internationally acclaimed design, planned and built  to reflect how  dynamic  City life  had become extended to virtually 24 hours a day and night life which , with it’s music scene clubs and bars is now legendary.

The Manchester Eye affords fantastic views of the Greater Manchester varied landscapes- a must see.

At the Gardens there is an oval shaped area split by the main through-parade crossing the gardens with a spectacular series of special fountains, hugely popular with children during hot summer days. At night, thanks to the incredible skill and ingenuity of renowned designer and light engineer Peter Fink you can enjoy the enchanting light show spectacle as the fountains spurt sporadically at different heights and on each cycle change colour. The result is magical like a choir of ice-like, jellylike spectres. Currently too we have the vast “Manchester Eye” feris wheel with its commanding views across the city and countryside beyond , illuminated at night makes a stunning backdrop to the fountain display and landmark in out city

Check out my Flickr slideshow portfolio of images of Picadilly Gardens and especially the awesome night time shots of the spectacular and magical fountains that are for me, simply magical.

Nothing to say - simply outstanding and magical!
