The Dutch women’s  hockey practice game today  against Australia ended with a 3-1 win with goals from the usual suspects ,  experienced internationals Maartje Paumen and Kim Lammers but also from talented new comer to the team ,Caia Maasakker.

The training game was played over three periods of twenty minutes. In the first part the Hockeyroos the lead, but in the second the Netherlands pulled it level with a short penalty corner from, you’ve guessed it captain  Maartje Paumen: 1-1. In the third and final period the Dutch tookthe lead when Kim Lammers capitalised on great  work form Welten  2-1. In the dying  seconds  Caia Maasakker made her mark  deflecting the ball into the Australian goal. The gamee was coach Max Caldas’s last preparatory game for   his team before the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy, which starts on Saturday .

Three games, including the final, will be  shown on Eurosport 2. The final on July 4th will also be broadcast. Pre- tournament friendlies of course are rarely reported in any detail since effectively they are simply match practice opportunities opportunities for coaches to experiment and try out different permutations of players , drills  and strategies and also to prevent too much being read into results. Australia, introducing half a dozen new but talented players to the squad have made impressive progress under only six months with new coach Alan Commens in charge. They  have already been involved in the Four Nations in Berlin last week along with the current World Champions and favourites for the Trophy, Argentina and were tough opponents as ever .

Caldas had to deal with the very recent loss of vice captain Naomi van As through a recurring injury  foot and calf problem which requires rest but she is expected to recover in time for the European Champions later in August..
