HOOFDKLASSE HOCKEY NEWS SCHC v OZ & HOW TO TUNE IN TO THE DUTCH HOCKEY SCENE

Last weekend the women of  SCHC were held to a goalless draw in their first game of the Dutch Hoofdklasse season  against Orange-Black (0-0). Unlike in our own top league (English Premiership)  where  the majority teams and clubs mostly escape similar media attention and usually have to produce their own press releases and or match reports  or appear in the round-up weekly press releases of England hockey , in Holland, at this level sports newspapers, magazines and official hockey related websites  seek out players, coaches and interview them for publication and most of these reports will appear inside sports papers and  either the Dutch hockey bond website or on the excellent independent hoofdklassehockey.nl website

Reports  may also be copy and pasted, published in local and regional press in the region where the club is based. So  translating ,  with some creativity having got the gist ,via Google Translate, from a report from the weekend in Dutch, (from source hoofdklassehockey.nl )  was that goalless draw a disappointment for coach , former Orange international insprational captain Janneke Schopman?

Janekke reflected that the best chance of the game came for SCHC from Olympian  Caia Van  Maasakker at the end of the first half with  a penalty, but  O.Z. goalie Larissa Meijer stood in  her path and made  a fine save. “But to be honest  it wasn’t only penalty that cost us the win”, she admitted .” We also had many other opportunities given to score. ”   Although Van Maasakker failed from the spot, she remained for Schopman  man of the match. “You can sometime miss a penalty but  next time she will be up for it and won’t miss.  Friday at  training went very well so I was actually surprised they lost  this game.

Elsewhere , Amsterdam hammered their neighbours in the wood’s , Pinoke 5-1 as did newcomers to the league Terriers with fellowess newcomers Nijmegen 5-0.  Utrech’ts Kampong with former Amsterdam  and multi-capped international Floortje Engels in nets beat the Hague’s (Den Haag’s) HDM 1-0. Den Bosch and Laren had perhaps unsurprising wins.

WHY NOT TUNE IN AND TURN ON TO DUTCH HOCKEY ! The Netherlands has a vibrant hockey scene and of course the Oranje Dames are current Olympic champions . Naturally all the squad play club hockey in the Hoofdklasse (literally top class) hockey league and the  squad in Heren hoofdklasse league. I follow in the main the women’s teams since I report from time to time on womensportreport.com as volunteer co-editor .For residents of the UK there are cheap flights available to get to holland and the public transport is efficient and comparatively cheap so getting to actual games should be no major problem if you book flights well in advance having studied the fixture lists which you can access on the above site. If you have Google Chrome as your web browser, it will automatically recognise the website is in Dutch and give you the option to translate content into English – it isn’t perfect but easily clear enough to get the gist.
